Many people ask us: “How do you get your hot stamping to look so close to authentic?”
The answer might surprise you —
With hot stamping, the machine doesn’t matter. What matters is the person.

1. What Is Hot Stamping?
The principle of hot stamping is simple:
“A brass die — why brass? It conducts heat quickly. Heat it up, press it onto the leather. The machine itself doesn’t matter — as long as it can heat and apply pressure. What matters is the person — the feel that the person controls is the key.”

Brass has high thermal conductivity, transferring heat quickly and evenly to the foil on the leather surface. But no matter how expensive your stamping machine is, the final result depends on the artisan’s feel and experience.
2. Machine Press vs. Hand Press
Most replicas on the market use automatic machine stamping — set the temperature, pressure, and time, press a button, and the machine does the rest.
Our craftsman insists on hand stamping.

Why?
“You can tell when a machine did it. Human hands always do it better.”
Because different leathers — Togo, Epsom, Swift, Box Calf, crocodile, ostrich — each has different density, thickness, and fibre structure.
A machine applies the same pressure to all of them:
- Soft leather gets crushed
- Hard leather won’t take the impression
- Crocodile scales are uneven — a machine leaves uneven depth
Only human hands can adjust pressure in real time based on every inch of leather.
3. Why Doesn’t Hermès Use Machines for Everything?
It’s a practical question.
Hermès works with dozens of leathers — Box, Epsom, Swift, Togo, Clemence, Evercolor, Chèvre Mysore, Barenia, crocodile, ostrich, lizard…
Each leather requires a separate stamping die.
Each die comes in different sizes — Birkin 25, 30, 35; Kelly 28, 32; Constance; and so on.
Each model has different font versions for different regions and years.
Our craftsman did the math:
“For just one Birkin model, you might need 30 to 50 different combinations. We can’t do that. So we do it by hand. That’s the power of capital. “
Hermès can afford to create separate dies for every leather, every size, every font — because they’re Hermès. They have the resources.
We can’t. So we choose to compensate with human skill — experience, feel, and understanding of every inch of leather — to complete every single stamp.

4. The Key to Hot Stamping: The Die and The Feel
“Hot stamping isn’t about the machine. It’s about the person.”
A machine is just heat + pressure. Any machine that can maintain temperature and apply pressure will do.
What really determines the quality of a stamp are two things:
1. The Die (Brass)
The engraving precision of the brass die determines the clarity and edge sharpness of the stamped letters. A rough die — no machine can produce clean letters.

2. Human‑Controlled Feel
Same die, same machine, same temperature — different people will produce completely different results.
Too much pressure — the leather collapses. Too little — the foil doesn’t adhere.
Wrong angle — letters are crooked. Right angle — perfectly centred.
Only experience can give you these.

5. Authentic Stamps Aren’t “Perfect” Either
Here’s a fact many don’t know:
Authentic Hermès stamps aren’t 100% perfect either.
Because Hermès uses hand‑stamped, letter‑by‑letter hot stamping — each letter is pressed independently, not all at once with a single die.
So authentic stamps have tiny variations in depth and position — that’s a characteristic of handwork, not a flaw.
Many replicas use one‑piece stamping — the whole line is pressed at once. The result is too “perfect,” too uniform — clearly machine‑made.
Sometimes, perfection is the least authentic thing of all.

6. What We Can Do
We can’t afford to create dozens of separate dies for every leather and every size like Hermès can.
But we can do this:
- High‑precision brass dies — ensuring every letter is crisp
- Pure hand stamping — adjusting pressure in real time based on leather softness
- Letter‑by‑letter stamping — replicating the authentic hand‑crafted feel
- Gold, silver, and blind (no foil) stamping — meeting different needs
What machines can do, machines do. What machines can’t do well — humans do.

We do not sell imitations; we purchase genuine handicrafts identical to those of Hermès
