Many people ask us: “You make Hermès, and you also make Chanel. What’s the difference?”

The difference is significant.
It’s not about which is better — it’s about two completely different craftsmanship philosophies.

1. Hermès = Leather + Hardware + Hand Stitching
A Hermès bag rests on three things:
- Premium leather — HAAS, Tanneries du Puy, Xinglong Group
- 18k solid hardware — brass base, multi‑layer plating
- Pure hand‑saddle stitching — two needles, one thread, beeswax‑coated linen

No sewing machine.
Every visible stitch on a Hermès bag, every stitch on stress‑bearing areas, is done by hand. The Dürkopp Adler machines in Hermès workshops are only used for non‑structural auxiliary work like temporarily holding lining panels.
Hand stitching is the soul of Hermès.

2. Chanel = Leather + Hardware + Sewing Machine
The craftsmanship logic of Chanel classics (like CF and 2.55) is completely different:

- HAAS leather — Chanel also uses HAAS, the same supplier as Hermès
- Hardware — brass base + plating (but the plating is thin)
- Machine stitching — the vast majority of stitches are done by industrial sewing machines
Chanel is not a hand‑stitched bag. This isn’t a criticism — it’s a fact.
Chanel’s craftsmanship path is industrial precision: using the most advanced machines and the most standardised process to produce highly consistent products.
Hermès’ craftsmanship path is the pursuit of artisanal perfection: using the most skilled artisans and the most traditional techniques to produce bags that are each unique.
Two paths. Neither wrong. Just different.

3. The “Secret” of Chanel Hardware
Many Chanel users encounter the same problem: hardware fading, oxidation, turning black.
It’s not an isolated case. It’s common.

Chanel hardware uses a brass base + electroplating process, with a gold plating layer only about 0.5‑1 micron thick — roughly 1/100 the thickness of a human hair. Daily exposure to sweat, skin oils, perfume, and humidity gradually wears down the plating, exposing the underlying copper alloy which oxidises and turns black.
This isn’t a quality issue — it’s a characteristic of the process itself.
Chanel’s gold plating isn’t 18k gold — it’s a colour created by layering multiple metals. The plating is thin, so it wears easily. It’s not solid gold, so it changes colour easily.
This isn’t Chanel doing something wrong — this is the path they chose. Industrial production prioritises efficiency and consistency, not the permanence of every single piece of hardware.
4. Our Upgrade: Chanel’s Bag, Hermès’ Hardware Standard
When we make Chanel classics, we make one upgrade:
Chanel’s bag structure + Hermès’ hardware standard.
Specifically:
- Hardware upgraded to 18k gold plating — not the thin plating Chanel uses, but the same thick 18k gold plating as Hermès
- Exclusive anti‑oxidation treatment — a secret oxidation‑prevention barrier layer between the plating and the brass base, preventing the copper underneath from oxidising and showing through
- Leather unchanged — still using HAAS leather, same source as authentic Chanel
- Stitching method preserved — Chanel classics are machine‑stitched, and we preserve this because it’s Chanel’s craftsmanship signature
The result: a Chanel CF that looks like Chanel, with hardware durability at Hermès level.
5. So, What’s the Difference?
| Hermès | Chanel (Authentic) | RWI TOP Chanel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | HAAS / Xinglong | HAAS | HAAS (same source) |
| Stitching | Pure hand | Machine | Machine (preserved) |
| Hardware | 18k thick gold | Thin plating (oxidises) | 18k thick gold + anti‑oxidation layer |
| Core | Artisanal极致 | Industrial precision | Industrial + hardware upgrade |
In our view, the two bags are just different processes — neither is superior.

Hermès is expensive because of the time cost of hand stitching. Chanel is expensive because of brand history and design.

What we do is simple: use the best leather, use the most honest craftsmanship, and deliver products that are worth every dollar.
6. A Deeper Thought
Our craftsman once said something worth reflecting on:
“Any product = hardware + leather + craftsmanship — a combination. Call it Hermès, call it Chanel. Add a brand story, and it takes off.”
Brands tell stories for their products. But we care more about the materials behind the story.
